What I Do With Baking Soda... and More......

Image Taken From Here
The red part is my updated part.

Has anybody ever heard of bicarbonate of soda? Probably not, but if it's baking soda I'm sure you've heard of it. Baking soda is a white powder that is traditionally used as a raising agent for baking. Many people actually forget that baking soda was originally intended for just that, baking! It has so many other uses today that baking is probably not even one of the top three anymore. You see it in toothpastes, laundry detergents, air fresheners.

There are many reasons to use baking soda in your home, but the number one reason is because this is a natural substance that will not harm you, your family or the environment because is it not a chemical compound that effects nature. Baking soda is actually a compound that is found through out nature, in the ocean, in the soil, in our foods, and in our bodies. Baking soda is a neutralizer of many other compounds, which is helpful in our daily living. I even buys it in bulk for stocking up since it's so versatile.

Is it Safe?

Baking soda is a safe product that you can even eat. Baking soda is used in a huge variety of foods that we eat every day. You could even take a teaspoon of baking soda and eat it if you like. While eating this teaspoon of baking soda right from the box might not agree with your taste buds, it is not going to cause your body any harm what so ever.

Baking soda is inexpensive and cheap. Broadening your use of baking soda, not only for baking but also in cleaning and for your own personal hygiene can help you save a lot of money in your household grocery and cleaning bills.

Enough with the talking, I will share you what I personally do with baking soda and many other uses for it.

Mouthwash:
When I run out of mouthwash I mix about 1/2 tsp of baking soda with water as a mouthwash replacement.

Toothpaste:
I dip my toothbrush into baking soda and add my usual toothpaste and brush my teeth with this mixture, regular use of this mixture will whiten your teeth.

Scrub / Exfoliator:
I mix baking soda and water to form a paste and apply it gently at my face or other rough parts like knees and elbows and rub it in a circular motion.

Bath:
I add about 1/2 cup to my bathwater to soften the skin.

Facial / Acne Mask:
I mix baking soda and water to form a thicker paste and apply it to the face as facial mask, but this mask is too rough for my skin lately so I only make a small amount of this paste and dab it into acne.

Hair Rinse / Shampoo:
  • I mix about 1 tbsp of baking soda and water and rinse my hair with this solution before shampooing, sort of a pre-shampoo treatment to remove those hair products buildup.
  • As a shampoo I sprinkle some baking soda to my shampoo and shampoo my hair as usual. This method also help remove hair products buildup.
I've read somewhere before that you can totally replace shampoo and conditioner with just baking soda and apple cider vinegar. This method is called no 'poo' method, the idea is you replace shampoo with baking soda rinse and conditioner with apple cider vinegar rinse and supposedly your hair will looks better than ever. I haven't had the guts to try this methods though, I only use this rinse as a pre-shampoo and after-shampoo treatment.

While there are more use of baking soda, the method that I mention above are the ones that I personally do with baking soda. Next I will share more use of baking soda but haven't tried yet. I gather these from various sources.

Baking Soda for Health
Deodorant:
Use it as underarm deodorant by applying it with a powder puff. Or make your own deodorant, 1.2 cup baking soda, ½ cup cornstarch. A few drops of essential oils such as lavender or cinnamon, maybe cedar or sage for men. Put all in glass jar, shake and blend well. Sprinkle light cover on damp wash cloth and pat on, do not rinse.

Diaper Rash:
Put two tablespoons in your baby’s bathwater to help relieve diaper rash

Skin Problems:
Apply soda directly to insect bites, rashes and poison ivy to relieve discomfort. Make a paste with water

Skin Itch and Irritations:
Take a baking soda bath to relieve skin irritations. Add a half cup of baking soda to a bath tub full of warm water. Soak the entire body. The baking soda will help relieve the itching and irritation. It will also help to soften skin! The bath will also relieve skin itch from insect bites and pain from sunburn.

Heartburn Medication (Antacid):
Take a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with one-half glass of water to relieve acid indigestion or heartburn. Note: Those taking prescription medications or following a reduced-sodium diet should check with a physician before consuming baking soda.

Canker Sore Pain:
Relieve canker sore pain by using it as mouthwash

Cradle Cap:
Use for cradle cap on infants, use thin watery mixture

Urinary Tract Infection Pain:
1 Tbsp mixed with about 32 oz. water is good for alleviating pain from a urinary tract infection. Neutralizes the acid of the urine and helps prevent kidney infections. To relieve symptoms of a UTI (and prevent future recurrences), fix yourself a baking soda cocktail. At the first sign of symptoms, mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in an eight-ounce glass of water and drink it. The baking soda raises the pH of irritating, acidic urine.

Bee Stings and Bug Bites:
Use a poultice of baking soda and vinegar.

Windburns:
Use it to relieve windburns, moisten some baking soda and apply directly.

Ease toothache pain by taking a cotton swab and moisten it with a bit of water, dip it in baking soda (coat the swab really well) then rub into tooth and gums until pain subsides. You can also make a mouth rinse by mixing a heaping spoonful of bicarb in a small glass of lukewarm to warm water, dissolve the soda then swish the mixture in your mouth around the sore tooth.

Mix just enough filtered water or cold pressed almond oil to create pastes to exfoliate your face or body.

  4. Sponge bath: Freshen up with a washcloth dipped in a solution of 4 tablespoons baking soda to 1 quart water.

Facial Mask and Scrub

  1. One part baking soda mixed with two parts of ground oatmeal makes a great scrub for your face. Just mix together the two ingredients and add enough water to make a paste. Gently rub the paste onto your face, avoiding the eye area. Leave the facial on for a few minutes. Then, gently remove it with plenty of cool water and a wash cloth. Your face will feel noticeably soft and smooth!
  2. It is easy to use a baking soda mask to help treat rashes and itchiness on the skin, simply create a baking soda paste and apply it to the affected area using your fingertips. Let the mask sit on the skin for 2-3 minutes, and then rinse it off with water. You can use a baking soda mask once per week.
  3. Baking soda prevents bacteria, making it one of the best remedies for problem skin. It benefits acne-prone, greasy or porous skin. It can be used as a face mask but also doubles as an exfoliate. When used on a regular basis, you will have noticeably clearer, softer skin and it is far cheaper and more effective than a lot of the treatments available at drug stores. Both the exfoliating method and face mask can be used once a day but you will need to ensure you always moisturize your face or it will become dried out.
Conditioner Booster:
Mix a little baking soda into your conditioner and lather on your hair to keep it healthy and resistant to split ends.

Men with sensitive skin may find that a solution of 1 tablespoon baking soda in 1 cup water makes a great preshave treatment or a soothing aftershave rinse.

Tone the skin with baking soda:
You can create a baking soda toner by pouring 1 teaspoon of baking soda into an empty, clean spray bottle, then filling the bottle with water. Shake the bottle gently to combine the ingredients thoroughly. After the skin has been washed and cleansed, spray the baking soda toner onto the skin. Allow the toner to dry completely. A baking soda toner is helpful for relieving the itchiness and redness associated with psoriasis and eczema.

Spot-Treat Acne:
If you’re in a bind, making a little paste from baking soda and water and applying it to an unwelcomed visitor will help dry it out. Not recommend this for deep cysts, but for more surface afflictions, it works like a charm.

Hole Filler:
Do you need to fill in some nail holes in a plastered wall? If you don't have any spackling handy, you can simply mix together some white toothpaste and baking soda. Fill the holes in completely, then allow the mixture to dry. If you want to match the wall color, add a drop or two of food coloring to the mix before you use it.

Soil Acidity Test:
Many flowers, fruits, and vegetables need to be planted in acidic soil in order for them to grow to their fullest. If you're not sure whether the soil in an area is acidic or not, then perform this test: mix up a quarter of a cup of baking soda with two cups of water. Then, stir in a cup of the soil. If the mixture foams up, then the soil is acidic.

Turn baking soda into modeling clay by combining 1¼ cups of water, 2 cups soda and 1 cup of cornstarch.

Baking soda is a must-have for your next camping trip. Its a dish washer, pot scrubber, hand cleanser, deodorant, toothpaste, fire extinguisher and many other uses.

Septic Care:
Regular use of baking soda in your drains can help keep your septic system flowing freely. One cup of baking soda per week will help maintain a favorable pH in your septic tank.

Doggy Deodorizer:
Make a doggy deodorizer by mixing 1/2 cup baking soda with 2 cups water then soak 1 bandana (sized to fit dog). Dry bandana in the sun then tie around Fido’s neck to help keep the odors at bay.

Musty Books Fix:
For books that got damp or are musty, sprinkle bicarb on the pages and allow time to air out. If there’s mildew on the paper you can rub the soda into the spots and lay out to bleach in the sun.

CAUTION:
A few words of caution about baking soda should be taken into consideration before using it in any of the remedies that are mentions in this post. Baking soda should be used only externally when used on children and babies. Always consult a physician before using baking soda if you have high blood pressure or a bad heart.
